An intense pulsed light beam emitted by the StarLux^TM system is preferentially absorbed by the skin areas with darker colour, or pigment as found in sun damaged spots. These dark areas heat up and the cells are damaged by the intense light. The body then breaks down the destroyed pigment and removes it naturally.

Microdermabrasion can remove superficial pigment by removing the dull dead skin cells of the surface. As well, the mechanical exfoliation may produce some skin tightening through collagen stimulation and the production of collagen and new skin cells.
